Dumb at Dambulla
Yes, Mendis continues to mesmerise. But the real damage was done before he came on to bowl. Four of the top five batsmen fell to the Lankan pacers, even when they're without the services of Maharoof, Malinga and Fernando. Dhoni said after the toss that the wicket had grass but would not help the pacers. Duh!? There was clearly both seam movement and bounce in the morning, and the Indian top order got bogged down and then threw their wickets away thinking they had to get quick runs before Mendis and Murali came on. It's a pity Ishant Sharma, who rattled the Lankans in the Tests, has not been made available to Dhoni. But if Dhoni is not going to give his bowlers the advantage of bowling first in helpful conditions, then I guess it makes no difference. India's homework was zero on the Dambulla pitch, which has grass imported from Australia, and has produced low scores for teams batting first recently. If only Whatmore had been our coach!

That's the Mendis effect again...average bowlers, faded stars and fading superstars are springing again, to new heavens of achievement on the Mendis vehicle.
Man tries to play ahead of Mendis and perishes before his fear....a hit and run if there was any, but with a subtle difference...the ramming vehicle arrives on the scene long after the accident.
It is fear on show here.
it is not just Dhoni's stupidity in choosing to bat first that is the problem here. the dumbness goes back much more - to the selection of the team itself. it is incomprehensible that a raw, untested, and mediocre Virat Kohli was picked for the ODI team at all, ahead of Shikhar Dhawan and Badrinath (who finally made it thru the backdoor), and what is more he was sent as an opener on a wicket that, as you pointed out, had bounce and seam movement. what were they all expecting? A miracle?
someone should do a piece on how Kohli got into the team at all - ahead of so many more deserving candidates - such as Asnodkar, for one.
